Sensei Keiko Fukuda of San Francisco has became the first woman to earn a 10th degree black belt in judo. She is 98 years old. Only three others have this martial arts’ highest ranking: all men living in Japan.

Barbara Shimizu-Houston, IJF-A, and Calvin Terada, IJF-A, were both selected by USA Judo and the Pan American Judo Confederation to referee the 2011 Sao Paulo World Cup in Sao Paulo, Brazil. It is very rare for two IJF-A referees from the same area of the country to attend such an event, nonetheless in the same geographic area. Judo is the second most popular sport in Brazil with many of the championship events televised live. Attached is their report from their trip as sponsored by NWJY:

2011 IJF Rule – Starting at the 2011 Cadet World Championships in Kiev, Ukraine, the IJF will be implementing a new rule to call up the white competitor first, rather than blue. Implementation of this rule will be at the IJF and world events only.
Implementation of this rule in the United States and the NW/Alaska region will be decided upon at a later time.
